Wild Animal (The Simple Dog Goes for a Joy Ride)

My simple-minded dog recently went on an unplanned adventure. Because the simple dog is so very simple, her adventure was alarming and horrible for everyone involved.

Even in her normal, familiar environment, the simple dog exists in a state of almost constant confusion.

She also appears to have very little control over what she is doing or why she is doing it.  For example, the other day, she was standing in the middle of the room just staring vacantly. Then she started turning in circles like she was preparing to lie down.

But instead of completing a few rotations and then lying down like a normal dog, she got stuck in the repetitive motion and couldn't stop turning slowly in place.

She is definitely not the type of animal that would thrive in the wild.

Unfortunately, she managed to escape one day while we were out walking, and she very nearly became a wild animal.

In the park where we were walking, there is a large horse statue.  We had passed the statue many times without incident, but for some reason, on that day, the simple dog became highly alarmed by it.

No one expects their dog to instantaneously develop an extremely specific fear of horse statues, and I was unprepared for her reaction, which was to sprint powerfully in the opposite direction. Unfortunately, what the simple dog lacks in cognitive capacity, she makes up in ground speed, and her sudden fleeing yanked the leash from my hand.

I chased her all the way across the park and into an adjacent neighborhood. She ran into a partially fenced yard and, when her forward trajectory was interrupted by the fence, she began to gallop in giant, crazy circles just out of my reach.

I'm fairly certain she had already forgotten what she was running from and had no idea what was going on, but there she was - propelling herself in endless loops around someone else's yard.

After several minutes of tearing around in circles, she felt compelled to take off running in a straight line.   She didn't know where she was going, but she was going to go there really fast.

I have spent a truly impressive amount of time teaching the simple dog how to respond to her name. I distinctly remember the self-congratulatory feelings I had when I thought I'd succeeded. I've done it, I thought.  I've overcome all of the obstacles and taught this animal her name, and now she will return to me like a falcon whenever I beckon her.

But as I watched my dog disappear into the distance, I realized just how futile my efforts had been.

I spent the rest of the day frantically trying to find her.  I drove around calling for her on the off-chance that she would actually respond.  I stopped random people on the street to ask them if they'd seen her.  It started to get dark and I imagined my poor dog, lost and scared - completely unable to make sense of what was happening to her.

Finally, I got a call from a woman who had managed to catch the simple dog.  The woman said that she found the simple dog standing in the middle of the road, wagging her tail and barking at cars. She gave me her address and I drove over to collect my wayward animal.

When I got there, the simple dog was curled up in a little ball on a towel on the woman's floor. I walked over to her and she looked confused.

She had forgotten who I was.  She thought she lived on the towel.

She was wet and dirty and she stunk like she had rolled on a dead animal.  There were burrs in her tail. She had puked up a pile of half-digested grass onto the woman's nice wood floor and was attempting to re-ingest it.

Based on the evidence, her adventure went something like this:

I helped the woman clean up the mess that my disgraceful animal had created in her home, then I thanked her and called my dog to go.

The simple dog did not respond, so I picked her up and carried her out.

I was glad to have her back, even though she didn't know who I was.  I couldn't blame her for forgetting.  A dog who becomes terrified by the mere existence of a stone rendering of a horse is not a dog who is well-prepared to absorb hundreds of unfamiliar sights and sounds, and I reasoned that she was most likely still in shock. I can only imagine how overwhelming the whole ordeal must have been from her perspective:

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the simple dog had trouble readjusting to being at home in the aftermath of her big adventure.

Because of her cognitive handicap, the simple dog is at a unique disadvantage when it comes to coping with minor obstacles that most dogs would take in stride. For most dogs, getting a taste of freedom wouldn't be something that would cause a major shift in their perception of reality. But it absolutely ruined the simple dog.

She had only been outside by herself for a few hours, but the staggering amount of new experiences had crowded out all her memories from before the adventure.

As far as the simple dog was concerned, she had been snatched away from her life as a wild, towel-dwelling animal and transplanted to a strange wonderland filled with terrifyingly unfamiliar sensory bombardments.

We have experienced these episodes a few times before.  From what I understand, they are a pretty normal consequence of disabled-dog-husbandry, and are usually pretty fleeting. But this one was different.  This time, the precipitating incident had been so extremely, entirely mind-bending that the simple dog had actually forgotten how to be a domesticated animal.

We had to teach her how to use the stairs all over again.

Despite having been potty-trained for the overwhelming majority of her life, she started blatantly soiling the carpet right in front of us, as if she had no idea she was doing anything wrong.

She violently destroyed every toy she had - even her inexplicably-patriotic-themed squeaky owl toy, which is her favorite.

And after she destroyed her owl, she grieved.  And we had to sew it up for her to avoid pushing her any further into psychosis.

She forgot her name and how to sit and all of the various other things we'd spent so many hours carefully guiding her to understand.

We did eventually manage to re-domesticate the simple dog. She re-learned stairs and how to not pee in the house and how to respond properly when her name is called.  She may not remember exactly who we are, but she seems to accept that she lives with us now.  She even plays nicely with her toys.

But every now and then, she will stare wistfully out the window.

And through the window, she will see the outdoors.

And sometimes, when the shapes of the trees and grass and birds hit her brain in just the right way, she will feel the call of the wild deep within her soul.

And it will trigger a relapse.

This is the best one ever, well done.

My dog is afraid of balloons, and a small statue of a pig that someone has in their yard. Also, many other lawn ornaments, any type of plastic bag that is lying in the street, and other things that she can't identify.

I, too, have a simple dog. Who runs away sometimes. But unfortunately she's never forgotten me. If she was in a nice lady's house and I could tell she didn't remember me I'd say, "Oh, sorry, I must be mistaken that is NOT my dog" as I backed quietly but quickly out of the room.

Also, I don't know if it's an coincidence, but my dog is terrified of the giant stuffed bobcat my husband's step dad had in our house.

We eventually had to move it into storage for the mental health of our dog, who shook, barked pathetically in an attempt to scare it away, piddled himself, and refused to walk within a ten foot radius if it.

He's much happier now! :D

I have no negative comments about simple dog's mental capacity. I love the blog and tried very hard to alternate reading it in class, trying not to laugh out loud, and referring back to the law books. Upon returning home my tiny fur-ball piranha terrier tried to eat my arm and then proceeded to bark incessantly at the horses on the television. Her and simple dog should be friends. But not like simple dog's road kill friend. Great post! Only blog I read.

This is awesome, and makes me feel slightly less alone with my own damaged dog. We have a three-year-old rescue. Nobody told us that he'd been abused and has problems with men, or that he's epileptic. The dog always seems to know that I'm ok and not a threat, but he forgets who my husband is. Everything will be fine, they'll be cuddling and playing, and all the sudden the dog growls and lunges. Or my husband will accidentally wake the dog up and the dog thinks he's an intruder...but I can wake him up and he always knows it's me.
Also, he developed a sudden fear of a particular red truck that always parks in the same place, and has never been a problem before.

Rease said...

I also have a simple dog! He has run away from me before, directly into on coming traffic. He too decides he is afraid of things he has seen many times before. I have to keep a list of things he is afraid of such as ping pong balls, cameras, and the song "Little Drummer Boy". I'd like to say our simple dogs would be friends but let's be honest, they would probably go mad from confusion at the sight of one another.

Love the post, as always!

I happen to have the cat version of Simple Dog (we call him Snapjacks). When I had treats he responded to his name, but when he escaped for 2 weeks (or as I like to call it - his Vision Quest) he somehow forgot who he was. We called and called to no avail. However, he was a neurotic bag of fear and peeing before he left, and came back pretty normal (except for gorging himself and barfing everywhere - he eats his feelings). But anywho, I feel your pain.

http://perpetuallyashley.blogspot.com/

Our simple-minded dog somehow escaped the house not too long after we moved here. Unfortunately, it was summer. In Texas, summer means it's 110+ degrees outside, and he just happened to wander in the middle of the afternoon. We hopped in our golf carts (yes, we have golf carts- yes, more than one) and cars (I couldn't drive yet, I had golf cart duty) and started driving around the neighborhood waiting for simple-minded dog, who actually knew his name, but not much else, to come running.

It was almost dark before we found him. We had printed out missing posters, and had started posted them around the neighborhood in various places. We got a call and we were shocked at first.

The caller ID read "MV Funeral Home"

This is not a place you expect or want to get a call from, but we answered it, since we didn't know the people around here that well anyway at the time.

Turns out, he had run less than a mile, got too hot in the sun, and ran under the pavilion with the hearses (is that the plural of hearse? oh well).

The funeral home director was kind and gave him some water and food while waiting for us to come pick him up. He still wanders off from time to time, but now would not hear his name, as he has gone deaf, and would probably not see much because we think he's losing his sight too :(

However, we now have another simple-minded dog. The good thing about this one? He's so simple-minded that he's afraid of the front door. He'll only go out in back. On a trip once, he tried to run to wherever my mom happened to be, because he was afraid and didn't know where he was. Of course, he ran across a busy parking lot....but other than when we force him to leave the house, he'll merrily stay in our backyard or in the house without much coaxing. He barks when someone comes in the house. And as he's barking, he runs to hide in his cage. At least we don't have to worry about him running away.

My family rescued a puppy that had been found hanging from a leash. She lost oxygen enough to cause a little brain damage. She was the sweetest dog in the world and had all the best intentions but sometimes she thought she was a sheep(we had sheep at the time in our farm). There were a couple times we had to potty train her.
I love dogs but have always been more of a cat person. I was told that dogs are smarter than cats, and in response to the first comment, it is true. But that makes me think that was the reason why I loved Guess(I was the one who got to name her and had just watched the movie Sarah Plain And Tall)so much.
Anyhoo back to my point, it is hard to have a special puppy, but it is so worth it for all the love and the adventures.

Sooooo A little more than a year ago, my husbands cat was accidently let out by his mother when she was babysitting our toddler. We kept seeing glances of the cat and kept calling him, putting out his favorite foods (nachos from Taco Bell, Tuna Fish, chips), yet he would NOT come to us. We named him "Jungle Chaz". 2 weeks later, we were able to trap him. He seemed like he didn't know us at first, and treated our other cat (whom he annoys with his affection)like a stranger and would howl and hiss at her. He's since returned MOSTLY to normal, but not all the way. This is exactly what happened to your dog!!

I cried from laughter when I imagined the simple dog just circling and circling, not lying down like normal dogs! Oh my god, I feel so tired now after all that crying and laughing. You make me take naps, damn you.

First of all, amazing! second, i believe your dog speaks simlish. When read outloud, all the human words sound like simlish.

And third. When SD started shredding USAOwl, i burst out with "IM A CHARGIN MAH LAZAH!!!"

You are win, allie. I also have a "simple dog." Though he responds to his name, its pathetically easier to get his attention if i yell "Mama's Little Retard!!!" The poor thing comes running with the biggest smile on his face.

Julie said...

Is your simple dog a beagle? She sure sounds like one. :) I have a beagle without a mental handi-cap and it still has trouble with simple tasks like coming when his name is called. :l

This post is rad. I don't know which I enjoyed more: Simple dog's adventure or the fact that you aren't dead.

Thanks for making waking up in the morning a lot easier, Allie.

Spinning around in a circle usually comes from when a dog has been raised in a puppy farm. They get stuck in cages and all they can do is go in circles. They also are free to poop/pee at anytime and will then generally have to sleep in it. This breaks them of the natural response to not sleep where they poop.

Great, but sad, story Allie! Poor, poor SimpleDog.

But I must admit, I feel like SimpleDog sometimes too.

What a way to start a day :D Been waiting for a new post from you a while, and I loved it! (Worth the wait!) Simple dog is nr 1!

This is honestly one of the best, funniest comics I've ever read.

Move over Jack London. This is now officially the best dog story ever written.

You see the world in ways most of us can barely dream of. Astonishing.

Today was such a lousy day. Then I found this. Everything became instantly better!

Oh dear! Poor simple dog. That must have been a terrible ordeal for all of you!

On the other hand, the Bohemian Rhapsody going on in the rescue woman's car made me laugh really hard. :)

I love the way you draw your simple dog.

Your day of not knowing where she was must have been absolutely harrowing for you. I can't imagine.

I'm glad she's back, brain or no brain.

Ahahaha! This is brilliant, pure gold like always Allie. The images were perfectly hilarious in every pickle of a way they might have been :D

I can completely sympathise. My dog is a (n at least part if not full) border collie. As such he is supposed to be highly intelligent but if he has actually taken in any of his training then he is very good at ignoring it.
He's also completely obsessed with out cat. Seriously, when they're both inside he just stares at her. Unblinkingly. For hours.
It drives me insane. And he's so obsessed that he won't listen to anything we say -__-

I guess it's a different type of frustration but boy! Is it frustrating.

Allie,
I just discovered your blog last month and have wasted many a work hour reading ALL of your posts. I love your posts about your dogs the most, they make miss my German Shepherd sooo much. Your simple, yet detailed drawings make your stories so much more interesting. I was so happy to see that your latest post was about one of your dogs! I was also so happy to see that you had not succumbed to some nasty, unknown bacterial anomaly that only attacks super smart and funny comedic artists. In other words...so glad you're back!

Can't wait for the next installment of simple dog.

Milla said...

Brilliant, just brilliant. I was beginning to think that you had forgotten us.
I always laugh the most at the simple dog posts. So funny, especially seen as I thought my dog was simple. But no, this is simple beyond comprehension.

Than you for posting again finally. I've been having to get my Allie fix by going back and reading very very old posts.
Oh, and by the way, you have inspired me. I have decided to start writing short stories on my blog, and possible illustrating them. Now of course, they won't be *half* as good as yours, plus, I'm not witty at all, so I won't even attempt that, but I really like writing and drawing.
Hope you don't mind...

x Milla

It seems clear your poor crazy dog has some brain damage. Perhaps her previous owners left her in a hot car a few minutes too long.

This delightful story made me laugh out loud several times.

YAY for a new post! :)
Glad your dog is OK, if a tad more confused than usual.
After reading this, I'm inclined to be a little more lenient towards my sister's dog the next time he decides to take himself for a walk without supervision. At least he knows his way back home and always uses the crosswalk (true story).

Worth the wait! That has like, the most pictures ever! Now we know why it took so long. Poor simple dog.

Holy carp, it appears you've been spying in my living room. Simple dog? Check. Pretty much everything else in your post? Check. To be fair, your simple dog is a bit smarter than mine, and she is offset by a cunning, evil creature of great will and means, so she has someone to follow.

Perrow said...

You totally inspire me to do great things! :D now i shall petition to make classes for increasing memory spans in simple dogs.

Oh, dear simple dog.

My friend and I were having a conversation some time ago in which we were lamenting the fan community for a TV show we both watch. It's a hive of idiocy, but it's a cheerful, non-trollish sort of idiocy where you don't feel quite justified in wanting to strangle those involved because they obviously mean well and don't realize they're being so damned stupid about it. Finally, I threw up my hands and exclaimed, "The Sherlock fandom is Allie's-dog stupid!"

This phrase has now become an important part of our vocabulary.

Hooraaaayyy! A new blog! I've been so lost for the last month... I've been like the simple dog dragging my confused ass around the house...
Does simple dog have a name other than simple dog?

I used to own a special dog too. Unfortunately, we had to make him an Outside Dog because no matter what we tried, he would not be potty trained. Now we have a cat...cat's are better!

Gracias Allie!! that made me think about my own wild nature... :)

Besos!

Chloe said...

I LOVE it.
I, too, have a simple dog. A simple dog that cohabitates with his dog toys peacefully most of the time... but sometimes... the wild calls him.
And he goes nuts, exactly like that last panel.
And then I have to sew up his toys. His unicorn only has one leg now, and a weird face.
He, too, runs in circles when the wild calls him. Runs and runs and runs. I've learnt to stand there and wait until he tires himself out (about two minutes) and gets distracted by the stick I'm holding.

Dogs are rad. Your posts are rad. You are rad. I <3 Allie!

Awww, Simple Dog!

I especially love how simple dog has the EXACT SAME COLOURING as the beagle mix my parents had when I was a wee toddler. Although ours wasn't a simple dog so much as a Perpetual Grumpyface Dog.
